Radiator hose burst on the highway, did I handle it right?

Had a bit of a scare on the E11 last week when I noticed steam coming from under the bonnet and pulled over to find the upper radiator hose had split. The temperature gauge had barely moved so I caught it early, which I'm thankful for, but I still had to figure out what to do on the spot with cars flying past. I let it cool down completely, then called for recovery rather than risk driving it, but a guy who stopped to help said I could have topped it up with water and limped to the next exit if I watched the temp carefully. Now I'm second guessing whether I overreacted and wasted money on a tow, or whether I did the sensible thing. I came across https://royalprinceautocare.com/blogs/ca...t-coolant/ afterwards while reading up on it, and honestly the answer seems more nuanced than either me or the helpful stranger assumed. My questions are whether driving a short distance with a topped up system is ever acceptable, and what actually causes a hose to fail like that out of nowhere since the car is only four years old. Also is it worth replacing all the hoses at once now, or just the one that failed?
